Our Roots: How Our Team Came Together

How AFP got started

Thomas O’Rourke and Darrick Brown worked together for 17 years at Wells Fargo, one of America’s five largest banks. Though they managed different groups in the bank – marketing and business banking, respectively – their paths crossed often.  They collaborated on a number of very successful strategic marketing and sales initiatives, including two programs that were adopted footprint wide by the bank.

Darrick then set off on his own in 2007 to form one of the earliest alternative funding brokerages, while Tom left Wells Fargo in 2012 to become the CMO of a real estate focused lending firm. Their close collaboration continued, as Tom engaged Darrick to train a number of Tom’s new brokers on how to become successful.

At the same time, Tom engaged Shane Walton and his firm Green Vine Marketing for consulting and marketing services for website design and digital marketing.  Tom walked away from this experience very impressed with Shane’s expertise, focus on ROI, and the value provided.

Tom had always envisioned a full-service firm for commercial brokers that provided capital sourcing, broker training, and marketing. This combination presented a huge, much-needed business opportunity in the alternative funding space, as it gave business loan brokers access to the full suite of services they and they clients needed to succeed.

Tom, Darrick, and Shane came together to sketch out exactly what this complete solution would look like.  A sketch turned to a business plan, and Alternative Funding Partners was born.
